Matt Riddle Teases MMA Return in 2024 Amidst Wrestling Success

Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024

Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) by 2024. At 37, Riddle is exploring options for a comeback to the sport where he initially made his name. The transition back to combat sports would mark a new chapter for the athlete who has spent the past several years making waves in the world of professional wrestling.

Exploring New Opportunities

Riddle's conversations with various fighting organizations have been shrouded in secrecy, but there are whispers of interest from multiple corners of the combat sports world. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there have been potential offers on the table from both bare-knuckle fighting entities and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), suggesting a wide array of opportunities for the versatile athlete.

The last time fans saw Riddle in an MMA fight was in February 2014, when he competed against Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Prior to that, Riddle had a stint in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which ended on a controversial note despite a four-fight winning streak following a victory over Che Mills in 2013.

A Controversial UFC Tenure

Riddle's UFC career was not without its complications. Two of his victories were overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, leading to a turbulent relationship with UFC President Dana White. White's public criticism of Riddle after his departure from the UFC was a significant moment in the fighter's career, potentially even shaping his future persona in the world of entertainment.

Despite the rocky end to his UFC tenure, Riddle has managed to remain a prominent figure in the sports world. Currently a free agent, he has kept his combat skills sharp, training in martial arts multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His presence at high-profile events like the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando keeps him within the fighting community's spotlight.

From MMA to Professional Wrestling

After leaving the UFC, Riddle turned his athletic prowess to professional wrestling. Beginning his training in 2014 and debuting in 2015, he quickly found success in various independent promotions, capturing several titles along the way. His charisma and combat skills translated well into the squared circle, earning him a spot in WWE NXT by 2018. It was there that he secured the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne.

Riddle's momentum didn't stop in NXT; he ascended to WWE's main roster and clinched the United States Championship in February 2021. Moreover, he formed a popular tag team known as "RK-Bro" with veteran superstar Randy Orton. Together, they captured the Raw Tag Team Championship twice, cementing Riddle's status as a formidable performer in the wrestling world.

Riddle Reflects on His Journey

In discussions with MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed a reflective yet optimistic outlook on his career trajectory. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he said. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."

Riddle also acknowledged the role that Dana White's criticism played in his career, suggesting it helped shape his 'bro' character that resonated with many fans. He credits the negative publicity with giving him a relatable edge that endeared him to a broader audience beyond the confines of the octagon.

Despite past grievances, Riddle remains open-minded about his future in combat sports. "I never say never," he remarked, indicating that he harbors no ill will that would prevent a return to the UFC if the conditions were right. His love for competition and desire for an 'exit' on his own terms appear to be driving forces behind his contemplation of a return to MMA.

"I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," Riddle reflected. "I did good [and am] still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"

As Riddle considers stepping back into the ring or cage, the sports world watches with anticipation. Whether he continues to entertain in the realm of professional wrestling or returns to the more literal fights
