Anaheim Ducks Revolutionize Local Broadcasts with Free Streaming and Over-The-Air Options
In an ambitious move aimed at expanding accessibility and enhancing the fan experience, the Anaheim Ducks are transitioning their local game broadcasts to a hybrid model that includes both direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional television. This strategic pivot is set to take effect in the upcoming season and promises to make Ducks games more accessible to fans across their expansive TV market.
According to Ducks president Aaron Teats, “We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air), will see locally broadcast games free of charge.” Teats underscored the organization's commitment, adding, “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.”
This innovative approach includes broadcasting 65 of the Ducks' games over-the-air on Channel 13, available in Los Angeles, ensuring that traditional television viewers can continue to enjoy the games without interruption. Complementing this, all games will be streamed regionally via the Victory+ streaming service at no cost to viewers. Victory+, an ad-supported platform, is set to launch in September and will be accessible on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones.
Teaming up with A Parent Media, the Ducks aim to revolutionize the way fans engage with their team. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, praised the Ducks' established leadership in content coordination, stating, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This collaboration reflects a broader trend within the NHL as teams seek novel ways to reach their audiences.
The decision to transition comes as the Ducks' previous broadcasting contract with Diamond Sports Group expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently embroiled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, previously held the broadcast rights for the Ducks, among other sports franchises. Despite these financial troubles, Diamond Sports Group still holds broadcasting agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA) and will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season.
The Ducks' extensive regional territory spans Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. With the launch of the Victory+ streaming service, fans in these areas will enjoy a more flexible viewing experience. Moreover, the ad-supported model ensures there are no financial barriers preventing access to the games.
California is not the only state witnessing such shifts in sports broadcasting. The Florida Panthers have announced their relocation of local broadcasts to Scripps Sports. Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars are planning to stream their games regionally on the same Victory+ platform, indicating a broader industry move towards streaming services and over-the-air solutions.
Significantly, the Ducks' cherished broadcasters Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain part of the broadcast team, ensuring continuity and familiarity for loyal fans. Their steadfast presence promises to maintain the high quality of commentary and engagement that Ducks followers have come to expect over the years.
This multi-faceted approach to broadcasting is more than just a technological upgrade; it's a strategic initiative to deepen fan engagement. By harnessing the capabilities of modern streaming technologies in conjunction with traditional broadcasting methods, the Ducks demonstrate a forward-thinking stance, poised to set a benchmark in regional sports broadcasting.
As the landscape of sports broadcasting continues to evolve, the Anaheim Ducks are leading the charge, ensuring that fans can connect with their favorite team seamlessly, whether through a television screen or a mobile device. With these advancements, the Ducks are not just playing games; they are creating a more inclusive and engaging fan experience, worthy of the passionate support of their regional audience.
