Washington Commanders Make Roster Adjustments and Tough Decisions

The Washington Commanders made significant roster adjustments this Tuesday, adhering to the NFL’s mandated 53-man limit. Among the most striking moves was the trade of wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles, a decision signaling the team’s strategic shift and commitment to restructuring under head coach Ron Rivera.

The trimming process was notable for its impact on recent draft selections. Players such as Ricky Stromberg, Braeden Daniels, K.J. Henry, Chris Rodriguez, and Andre Jones Jr., despite their potential, found themselves on the chopping block. This pruning left just Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Quan Martin as the remaining members of the seven-player group drafted 16 months ago.

Reflecting on the Commanders' recent draft history under Rivera, it’s clear the team is not shying away from tough decisions. Of the 33 players drafted between 2020 and 2023, only 12 remain on the roster. This statistic underlines Rivera’s relentless drive to mold the team according to a clear vision and standard, something he has been known for throughout his coaching career.

General Manager and head coach Dan Quinn commented on the process, emphasizing the necessity of making decisions that he believes are in the best interest of the team. “We're always going to make what we think is the best decision for the team. That's our obligation. There's no 'ours' or 'theirs,' or any of that kind of good stuff. Like once I was here, I connected with lots of players here. So yeah, no looking at it as anything other than just do what we need to do best for the team and really that's where it starts and ends,” Quinn stated.

This approach is particularly relevant as the team prepares to leverage its second waiver wire claim spot, trailing only the Carolina Panthers. Quinn outlined the importance of the scouting department during this phase: “As the wire comes back out today, obviously the scouting department is the key part of that, of assessing a player that may be on another team that gets released and a current player on our team.”

In terms of current roster composition, the Commanders are now carrying three quarterbacks, three running backs, six wide receivers, four tight ends, nine offensive linemen, nine defensive linemen, five cornerbacks, six safeties, and three specialists. This balanced structure is a clear reflection of the team’s aim to establish depth and flexibility across all positions.

However, the roster culling wasn’t limited to lesser-known players. Some more recognizable names, including quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Trace McSorley, as well as running backs Chris Rodriguez Jr., Michael Wiley, and Austin Jones, were also cut. Wide receivers Martavis Bryant, Kazmeir Allen, Davion Davis, Mitchell Tinsley, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, and Brycen Tremayne were released, highlighting the competition and depth at those positions.

The tight end group saw Cole Turner being let go, while the offensive line cuts included Ricky Stromberg, Cameron Tom, and Julian Good-Jones. On the defensive side, K.J. Henry, Andre Jones Jr., Jalen Harris, and Justin Hollins were cut, alongside linebackers Chapelle Russell and Anthony Pittman. The secondary wasn’t left untouched either, with cornerbacks Chigozie Anusiem and Nick Whiteside released.

The team retains stalwarts like defensive tackles Allen and Payne in the starting lineup, providing a solid foundation up front. In the secondary, standout performances have earned Martin and Jeremy Chinn the roles of the primary safety duo. Offensively, Bryan Robinson, Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols are set to lead the running back corps, demonstrating the Commanders' focus on a versatile and robust ground attack.

Quinn encapsulated the essence of the remaining players and his vision for the Commanders succinctly: “You feel their intensity, you feel their speed when they play. The speed, the physicality, the effort, the straining, those are things that are Commander-style plays and I thought those two really represented that.”

As the Commanders turn their attention to the upcoming season, the emphasis on adaptability, speed, and physicality will undoubtedly be the cornerstone of their strategy. The recent roster moves underscore a commitment to these principles, aiming to forge a team that not only competes but exemplifies the Commander spirit Quinn so passionately advocates for.
