Pittsburgh Steelers Preseason Offensive Struggles

As the Pittsburgh Steelers progress through their preseason schedule, offensive struggles have emerged as a significant concern. Across two preseason games, the team has managed to accumulate only 15 points, a stark indicator of the challenges they face on that side of the ball. The recent 9-3 defeat underscored these issues, highlighting key areas that need urgent attention.

Offensive Woes

The numbers tell a clear story. Out of the 15 points scored, only three materialized with Justin Fields at the helm. A persistent lack of pass protection has hindered him from establishing a consistent offensive rhythm. "It's somewhat of an incomplete study because you just don't get a chance to see them operate or us operate or us establish rhythm and personality when you're not winning possession downs," expressed head coach Mike Tomlin.

Quarterback Struggles

Russell Wilson's performance against the Buffalo Bills highlighted these difficulties. Over five series, Wilson was unable to orchestrate a single scoring drive and endured three sacks. The initial series of the game resulted in three-and-outs, leaving no room for offensive rhythm. "The first three or so series of the game, it was three and out, and you're not going to get an opportunity to establish rhythm or play the way you'd like as an individual or a collective," noted Tomlin.

Protecting the Quarterback

The offensive line remains a critical focal point. The inexperience of Broderick Jones, shifted to right tackle for the game, was evident as Greg Rousseau from the Bills capitalized on this vulnerability. Justin Fields suffered a sack, adding to Pittsburgh's woes. Tomlin was candid about the team's pass protection issues, emphasizing, "We've got to do a better job in pass protection than we did -- not only in possession downs but just in general."

Injury Setbacks

Compounding these challenges are injuries to key players. Veteran center/guard Nate Herbig faces a potential season-ending injury due to a torn rotator. Additionally, rookie first-round pick Troy Fautanu is currently sidelined with an injury. These setbacks further strain an already struggling offensive line, making Tomlin's job of fine-tuning the team's protection even more daunting.

Upcoming Challenges

Looking ahead, the Steelers' preseason finale against the Detroit Lions looms large. The performance of the offensive line during this game will be closely scrutinized, with Tomlin keen on determining who will start as quarterback. As he put it, "I was really upfront with the group about it in that regard, that can't be a problem for us. We've got to be better than we were tonight in that area."

These preseason games, albeit difficult, serve as crucial learning experiences. The ability for the Steelers to address and rectify pass protection shortfalls, while managing injuries and nurturing young talent, will be pivotal as they prepare for the regular season. Tomlin’s candid assessments and strategic adjustments will be key in reversing the early-season struggles on offense.

In the pressure-cooker environment of professional football, the spotlight now burns brightly on Pittsburgh's offensive unit. As the team marches forward, the focus on shielding their quarterbacks and generating a more robust and cohesive offensive system will be the cornerstone of their aspirations as they gear up for the challenges that lie ahead.
