Arizona Cardinals Optimistic for 2023 Season with Kyler Murray's Return

As the Arizona Cardinals approach the upcoming NFL season, a wave of optimism is in the air, largely due to the progress and recovery of their star quarterback, Kyler Murray. Reflecting on the same time last year, the Cardinals were venturing into their inaugural season under the leadership of head coach Jonathan Gannon, with Murray sidelined due to an ACL injury sustained late in the 2022 campaign.

During the offseason, Murray dedicated himself to an extensive rehabilitation regimen with the Cardinals' training staff. This hard work has culminated in his full participation in the offseason program, a stark contrast to the year before. Gannon's excitement regarding Murray's progress is palpable.

"Physically and mentally, I mean, he looks damn good. He looks damn good," Gannon remarked, highlighting the quarterback's impressive recovery. Evaluating Murray's journey, Gannon noted the challenges faced last year. "You know, 'cause you gotta think, he played really good football for us; he had never taken a snap in this offense until Atlanta [in Week 10], you know what I mean, his first game back. I mean, he had a couple weeks of practice leading up to that, but no offseason program, no training camp. No however many games we played without him. Couple weeks of practice and then, you're going, 'Let's play football.'"

Last season, upon his return, Murray managed to complete 65.7% of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. He logged 10 touchdowns against five interceptions and contributed 244 rushing yards with three additional scores on the ground. Encouraging as these stats are, the current offseason preparation suggests an even brighter outlook for 2023.

Gannon has been unequivocal in his praise for Murray’s current form, stating, "So, I think from a mental and physical standpoint, right now where he's at, to even when he got back last year or even where he finished last year, I think he's leaps and bounds ahead." This speaks volumes about the quarterback's dedication and Gannon’s confidence in his abilities.

A significant boost for the Cardinals' offense this year comes in the form of rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. The addition of Harrison Jr. adds a new dynamic to the team's offensive arsenal, likely to further enhance Murray's impact on the field.

Gannon's trust in Murray is profound and deeply rooted in their mutual ambition and relationship. He commented, "What I know about the guy, my relationship with him when I got this job: His will to win is extremely high." Murray's eagerness to elevate both his game and the team's performance is evident and appreciated. "And if you detail out and lay out for him what is needed from him to improve himself, the offense and the team, he is one thousand percent willing to do that."

This offseason, Murray has proven to be more than just a skilled player; he’s become a pivotal leader. Gannon articulated this sentiment, saying, "So, I love the guy, because he's done everything that I've asked of him and more. He's been a phenomenal leader on and off the field -- not just with the offense, but with the entire team."

The Cardinals' hopeful outlook isn’t without merit. The alignment of Murray’s health, his refined skills, and his leadership, coupled with strategic additions like Harrison Jr., sets the stage for a promising season ahead. With Gannon at the helm and Murray back in prime form, Arizona fans have compelling reasons to anticipate an exciting and successful season.
