Mike Trout Begins Rehab Assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake City

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout is on the brink of making a significant return to the field. The 32-year-old superstar, who has been a cornerstone of the Angels’ lineup, begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake City on Tuesday night.

Trout has been sidelined since April 29 due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, an injury that required surgery on May 3. The injury marked another chapter in the recent spate of health issues that have plagued the three-time MVP and 10-time All-Star.

A player often regarded as one of the best in the game, Trout has been limited by several injuries over the past few seasons. Last year, he played in only 83 games due to a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. The previous year, his season was disrupted by a back injury, and in 2021, a calf strain limited him to just 36 games.

Despite these setbacks, Trout remains a key figure for the Angels. Before his latest injury, he was batting .220 with 10 home runs. His presence in the lineup is sorely missed, and his return is eagerly anticipated by teammates, coaches, and fans alike.

Preparation and Progress

Trout’s preparation for his return has been rigorous. Over the weekend, he took batting practice at the Angels' spring training facility in Tempe, Arizona. This marks a significant step forward in his recovery process and indicates that he is close to regaining his form.

During his rehab stint with the Salt Lake Bees, Trout will initially serve as a designated hitter. The plan is for him to gradually ease back into his role in center field, with the goal of playing seven innings on defense. “Hopefully that's another progression he's making, and we can have him back,” said Ron Washington, reflecting the organization’s optimism. “I don't know exactly when, but let's see how it goes in Salt Lake City and then make a call from there.”

A Familiar Setting

This isn’t Trout’s first time with the Salt Lake Bees. Back in 2012, he played 20 games with the team, boasting a remarkable .403 batting average with one home run and 13 RBIs over 77 at-bats. Returning to a familiar setting may provide an added boost as he works his way back to the major leagues.

Washington also noted Trout’s excitement and dedication during this recovery phase. “I've been talking with him every day. He's excited about every progression that he makes, and he can't wait to get back, and we certainly can't wait to have him,” he added.

Looking Ahead

As Trout embarks on his rehab assignment, the Angels, currently grappling with their own challenges this season, have reason to be hopeful. While the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain, the strides he’s making are promising. His return could provide the necessary spark for the team as they push through the latter part of the season.

The Angels, their fans, and the baseball world will be watching closely as Trout takes this crucial step. If his rehab goes according to plan, it won’t be long before the perennial All-Star is back patrolling center field in Los Angeles, aiming to remind everyone why he’s one of the most revered talents in the sport.
